Reconcilation at Ruins

This Project is started from historical considerations that Kells Priory and Kilkenny had been experienced. The history of three times of invasions and the witch trials was cause of Kells Priory’s physical conditions that has halfway between a monastery and a fortress, and finally it became a closed face. After that, Kells Priory have been remained as a ruin with the moments of demages. Today, Kells Priory is prepared to rebirth, and the new status should be different from the exclusive figures comes from the history of the past. Because of this reason, the new word that was suggested to Kells Priory must be “Reconciliation”.

The indication of the value “Reconciliation” is dealt in two ways. First one is the direct expression of architectural language; Masses created from the columns show the gestures of stereotomy and floating to meet the existing as it closer to the deepest place of Kells Priory, and at the end it combined and fulfills the harmonizing between the newly constructed building and the original remains. The second one is a composition of the activities; while Kells priory at the past acted as a mainly religious facilities and gathering spaces allowed to only some people, new Kells Priory of today intend the more active community space absorbing residents and artists and inducing mixing them. For this, atelier is located beside the restaurant, café, water garden and gallery where the flow of many people occurred, and residences for artists are positioned on the atelier. The galleries are scattered for various spatial experiences.

As a result, “Reconciliation” is realized in the physical facts as architecture, and dynamical elements of activities. It is not just the elimination of past remains and spirits, but the synthesis output comes from the dialectical interpretation of old things and newly constructed things. Finally, Kells priory is became to space of reconciliation for emergence of healthy cultural communities opened to everyone. This new face of Kells Priory would make people experience the value what we need in today’s world.
