Adaptive Reuse of “Cascina”

A home isn’t solely a place to eat and rest but somewhere memorable. The UN:COVERED Village is the redefinition of a traditional cascina. Instead of designing a home and outdoor amenitiesm this residence offers a space for communal connection. The voids create a place where residents can enjoy different activities either alone or with neighbors. The communal space where various activities occur is defined by a roof rather than a closed element such as fence. This roof is composed by holes in different directions. The voids open the possibility for the community to expand in the future. This gesture is not only a design choice but a medium for human interacion. The interaction between residents is what essentially gives life to this building.

Each housing has different characteristics which make unique yet unified. Housing A and B have both minimal intervention and reminiscene of the past. Housing C had the disadvantage of having a low roof compared to other residences. Beacause of the additional roof, Housing C would not have had enough natural sunlight or personal outdoor space. The craetive solution of bringing the height indoors and creating a private outdoor space made this residence breatha ble and unique. Lastly, Housing D also uses its original shape as an advantage by reusing the corridor area as a newly designed private outdoor space for each resident. Although these homes how resemblance to each other, small and detailed choices make them greatly different from each other.

Cascina Lossano, which used to be quiet, is woven together and takes on a new appearance. The existing Aia is reinterpreted and created as a new space where various events occur. What we hope is that the new cascina lossano that has gone through this process will connect people and furthermore bring new vitality to the local community.
